Hand-me-down Guide

Globally, the equivalent of one garbage truck of clothing ends up in landfill every second.

The best thing we can do for the planet our children will grow up in is keeping clothes in play for longer. Our hand-me-down guide can help with that! Our products have been made to be worn. We want your kids to make their best childhood memories wearing BY GEE so here are our tips for washing to keep them looking their best, ready to be passed down to siblings, cousins and friends for years to come.

Washing guide

As a blanket rule, cold machine wash and line drying in the shade is the best way to protect the longevity of your clothes. All our fabrics have been pre-washed during the manufacturing process to avoid shrinkage and colour bleeding, however it is important to follow the care instructions to extend the lifetime of your BY GEE pieces.

For tough stains we recommend soaking in cold water with a stain removing powder or a pre-treating spray. Please follow the instructions on your stain removing products carefully, as leaving them on for too long can risk bleaching the fabric.

Frequently Asked Questions

CAN I HOT WASH YOUR CLOTHES?

Hot washing, while sometimes effective, is tough on clothes and the environment. It can cause shrinkage and fading (especially in natural fabrics), weaken fibres, and cause garments to lose their shape or fade prints and colours quickly. Hot water can even “cook in” some stains.

Hot washing is also harsh on the environment - using cold or warm water (below 30°C) can reduce energy consumption by up to 80% per load and also prolong the life of your clothes.

CAN YOUR CLOTHES GO IN THE DRYER?

Ideally we recommended line drying in the shade as this is the most gentle on natural fibres.

When using a dryer, opt for an air dry or cool dry setting. The heat from tumble dryers weakens fabric fibres, which can lead to shrinking, holes, pilling, and colour fading.

CAN I SOAK YOUR CLOTHES?

Yes! For tough stains we recommend cold soaking with similar colours or pre-treating with a stain removal spray.

Please follow the instructions on your stain removing products carefully, as leaving them on for too long can risk bleaching the fabric.
